About
The unspoiled island of São Jorge is part of the Azores’ central group and is separated from its nearest neighbours (Pico and Faial) by a 15km straight. The island has a dramatic mountainous backbone surrounded by lush green craters and is home to a huge variety of birdlife. It is an island of cliffs and crags and is perhaps the greenest and most dramatic of the Azores. The rugged landscapes offer fantastic walking opportunities with staggering views of the neighbouring islands and the sea beyond.
This stunning island is one of the trio which forms our ‘Three Island Tour’. During your three night stay on the island, we include an all-encompassing tour which takes in many of the stunning villages and sights including coffee plantations and forest parks. There will also be the chance for you to try more active pastimes such as canyoning and coasteering during your stay should you wish to up the pace.
São Jorge is uncharacteristically long and slender and therefore is susceptible to ocean erosion. This unique terrain has resulted in the majority of locals living on the coastal plains (fajãs) which lie at the foot of the steep volcanic cliffs. The abundant walking trails offer incredible views of the collection of traditional houses dotted along the dramatic coastline which is unlike any of the neighbouring islands. This can all be enjoyed during our Caldeira de Santo Cristo day where we offer a range of hiking options from leisurely jaunts to longer hikes - the choice is yours.
This island delivers spectacular scenery that you will not find anywhere else in Europe. It genuinely feels like you have travelled all the way to Hawaii’s Nāpali Coast. The island easily warrants the three-night stay we include in our 'Three Island Tour'.
