Summer and the Midnight Sun
Visiting Iceland in the summer is to visit in the season of fresh temperatures, radiant skies and vibrant colours. It is said to be a time when the island emerges from hibernation with migrating birds and marine animals regaining the coasts and taking advantage of its lengthy daylight hours.
Despite most thinking of it as a winter destination, summer is the peak tourist season for the island when people travel here to enjoy the abundance of natural wonders in the idyllic light of the Midnight Sun, as well the emerging wildlife.
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland's climate benefits from a temperate oceanic influence which sees average temperatures of around 7°C to 20°C. However the weather in Iceland can be famously changeable so visitors should be prepared for all weathers – so the traditional saying in the island goes - "if you don't like the weather in Iceland simply wait five minutes!"
About Summer Holidays in IcelandFeatured Holidays
A long day
Known as the land of the Midnight Sun, Iceland enjoys lengthy daylight hours and a 'nightless' night during its summer season.
Only the very top parts of the island are above the Arctic Circle which means that daylight is not 24 hours as it is in parts of Northern Norway and Finland. In July the sun sets in Iceland just after midnight and rises again at 3 am so the days are long and filled with warm and bright light.
These slow sunsets and sunrises make for picturesque displays of colourful skies which last for hours, making summer the ideal time to travel for those with an interest in photographing the landscape in this wonderful light.
The long daylight hours also mean that activities and excursions can carry on for longer in the summer and often locals and visitors alike will stay up until the small hours, enjoying the changes in the light and the boost in energy that the longer daylight hours bring.
