Witness the Midnight Sun in Norway
The regions of Northern Norway have a multitude of highlights – from the winter snowfall to dazzling mountains and fells to the chance to witness the spectacle of the Northern Lights. In the summer, though, the region offers endless daylight and the incredible spectacle of the Midnight Sun – a true wonder to behold.
The natural phenomenon of the Midnight Sun occurs in Northern Norway due to the tilt of the earth's axis meaning that regions above the Arctic Circle have much-increased daylight hours, which increase the further north you travel.
For a week or so in the summer the sun never sets in Northern Norway and instead dips briefly below the horizon before rising again, illuminating the remarkable landscape 24 hours a day.
About Midnight Sun in NorwayFeatured Holidays
A long summer night
It is said in Northern Norway that the 24 hours of daylight gives the flora and fauna an energy boost which is thought to rub off on the people and will no doubt have an impact on visitors too.
Whilst it may seem a bit unnatural at first that 2 am can look like 2 pm, guests to this region soon adapt, enjoying meals and activities late into the night and sleeping less.
A popular activity is, of course, to stay up until midnight and watch the sun bob briefly below the horizon and we have arranged trips to fully enhance the experience and make the most of the golden glow of the day which accentuates the real beauty of Northern Norway.
The Artisan experience
We have several trips which have been designed around the enjoyment of the Midnight Sun. The first is our Self Drive Tour Of Norway's Fjords which has been designed to offer you the chance to experience the sights of the city of Tromsø in addition to appreciating the endless summer nights on the island of Sommarøy.
The beautiful island of Sommarøy is known locally as the 'summer island' and here you can stay up late into the night appreciating the vibrant fishing community with its white sandy coral beaches and emerald green water.
We have our remarkable Spitsbergen summer trip, a six-night extravaganza to this unique far-flung island.
Here you will enjoy two separate day-long boat tours, visiting glaciers, settlements and abandoned Soviet ghost towns, all the while relaxing in the cool summer temperatures under the glow of the Midnight Sun.
